Is Upright MRI Better Than Closed MRI? Understanding the Differences to Make the Right Choice

Medical imaging plays a vital role in diagnosing and managing a wide range of conditions. At ImageCare Radiology, we know that comfort and accuracy matter when choosing the right imaging test. One question patients often ask is whether an upright MRI is better than a traditional closed MRI.

One is not necessarily better than the other. With the correct information about both options, you and your healthcare provider can make the decision that best meets your needs.

What Is an Upright MRI?

An upright MRI allows you to be scanned while sitting, standing, or in a slightly reclined position. It’s an open design that is particularly helpful for patients who:

  • Experience claustrophobia in enclosed spaces
  • Need to be imaged in weight-bearing positions
  • Have limited mobility or difficulty lying flat

Upright MRIs use the same magnetic technology as traditional MRIs but are designed to capture images of the body in a more natural, functional position.

What Is a Closed MRI?

A closed MRI is the more traditional imaging setup, where the patient lies flat inside a narrow tube. This type of scan offers:

  • High-resolution imaging, especially for soft tissue
  • Greater magnetic field strength, which may be necessary for certain detailed studies (such as brain, spine, or joint evaluations)
  • A wider range of available protocols for different parts of the body

Though the enclosed space can be uncomfortable for some patients, closed MRIs often deliver the most precise imaging results.

How to Decide Which MRI Is Right for You

Choosing between an upright MRI and a closed MRI depends on your personal comfort level, medical condition, and the type of imaging your provider recommends.

At ImageCare Radiology, we’re here to walk you through your options with compassion and expertise. Our goal is to make sure you feel comfortable, supported, and well-informed every step of the way.
