Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is among the safest and most comfortable medical imaging procedure available. MRI provides your doctor with a clear image of your body parts, especially the soft tissue, to identify whether your organs and soft tissue are functioning optimally. This technology uses magnetic fields and radio waves to perform this noninvasive procedure.

What is MRI and how does it work?

Magnetic resonance imaging is a method of obtaining detailed pictures, or images, of internal body structures without the use of radiation or radioactive substances of any kind. This is accomplished by placing the patient in a magnetic field while harmless radio waves are turned on and off. This causes the body to emit its own weak radio signals which vary according to tissue characteristics. These signals are picked up by a sensitive antenna and fed to a computer which produces detailed images of the body for interpretation by our staff of board-certified radiologists, which is then reported to your physician.

Pictures from an MRI scan are digital images comprised of “slices” compiled from the MRI procedure which can be saved and stored on a computer for more study. The images can also be reviewed remotely, such as in a clinic or an operating room. In some cases, contrast material may be used during the MRI scan to show certain structures more clearly.

MRI is also versatile, with the ability to image most parts of the body for effective and efficient evaluation of:

  • Brain disorders
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Eye abnormalities
  • Tumor detection
  • Liver and other abdominal diseases
  • Knee and shoulder injuries
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Facial and/or neck abnormalities
  • Blood flow and vessel disorders

What should I expect from my MRI procedure?

During the MRI procedure, patients are required to remain still during each imaging sequence, which may last 2 to 6 minutes or a total exam time of 20 to 45 minutes. This is a non-invasive procedure so patients can relax and often nap during these tests.

There is no special preparation for most MRI exams. We encourage our patients to wear comfortable clothing such as a sweatsuit without metal snaps or zippers. As a courtesy to our patients, we can offer robes to wear if needed.

For our patients’ safety, we ask that they remove all hairpins, body piercings, watches, and most jewelry before entering the MRI scan room. It is best to leave your valuables at home. If you are going to have an MRI of the abdomen or pelvis, do not eat or drink 3 hours prior to your exam.
