Does a 3D Mammogram Feel Different?

You will still stand at the mammography unit while the technologist positions your breast and applies compression.

The difference is mainly in how the images are captured, not in how the exam feels.

Is Compression Still Necessary With 3D Mammography?

Yes. 3D mammography still requires breast compression.

Compression may feel uncomfortable, but it is brief and helps improve image quality while reducing the amount of radiation needed.

Does 3D Mammography Use More Radiation?

Both 2D and 3D mammography use low-dose X-rays.

The exact radiation dose can vary depending on the equipment and whether separate 2D images are taken in addition to the 3D images.

Modern systems can often create a synthetic 2D image from the 3D data, which may reduce the need for a separate 2D exposure.

Your imaging team uses the technique that is appropriate for your exam while keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable.

Is a 3D Mammogram Better for Dense Breasts?

3D mammography can be especially useful in dense breast tissue because the layered images can help reduce the effect of overlapping tissue.

Dense breasts are common and are not abnormal. They simply contain more fibrous and glandular tissue compared with fatty tissue.

Because dense tissue and some breast abnormalities can both appear white on a mammogram, having additional views through the tissue can sometimes make findings easier to evaluate.

Can 3D Mammography Find More Breast Cancers?

Research has shown that 3D mammography can improve cancer detection in some groups and may also reduce the number of people called back for additional imaging after screening.

That does not mean a 3D mammogram finds every cancer or that it replaces all other breast imaging.

If a finding needs a closer look, your provider may recommend additional mammogram views, breast ultrasound, MRI, or another test depending on the situation.

Does Everyone Need a 3D Mammogram?

Not necessarily. The right type of mammography depends on your age, breast density, personal and family history, prior imaging, and whether the exam is being done for routine screening or to evaluate a specific concern.

Your provider or breast imaging team can help determine which approach makes the most sense for you.

What Happens If Something Looks Abnormal?

An abnormal mammogram does not automatically mean breast cancer. Many findings turn out to be benign.

If the radiologist sees an area that needs a closer look, you may be asked to return for additional imaging. That could include more mammogram views, ultrasound, or another test.

In some cases, a biopsy may be recommended so tissue can be examined more closely. The goal is to understand what the finding represents before drawing conclusions.

What Should You Expect During the Appointment?

Whether you are having a 2D or 3D mammogram, the basic process is similar.

A technologist will position each breast on the mammography unit and apply compression for a short time while the images are taken.

You may be asked to change position slightly between views.

On the day of the exam, avoid applying deodorant, powder, lotion, or similar products to the breasts or underarms unless your imaging center gives you different instructions, since some products can interfere with mammogram images.
