What are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop from the muscle tissue of the uterus. They are one of the most common gynecological conditions, with estimates suggesting that up to 40 percent of women over the age of 35 have fibroids. These growths can vary widely in size, with some being virtually undetectable to the human eye, and others growing large enough to alter the shape of the uterus and cause significant symptoms.Torso of a Woman in a White Sweater and Pants Holding a 3D Model of a Uterus in Front of Her Stomach

What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Uterine fibroid embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that serves as an alternative to traditional surgical methods such as hysterectomy or myomectomy. In this procedure, tiny particles are injected into the arteries supplying blood to the fibroids, effectively blocking the flow and causing the fibroids to shrink. Since being one of the first practices to offer this procedure in New Jersey in 1996, ImageCare Radiology has successfully performed over 1,500 uterine fibroid embolization procedures, providing relief and improved quality of life for numerous patients.

How Does a Uterine Fibroid Embolization Procedure Work?

The uterine fibroid embolization procedure is performed by making a small incision in the skin at the hip region. From there, a catheter is inserted into an artery and carefully maneuvered under X-ray guidance into the uterine arteries. Embolic agents are then injected to obstruct the blood flow to the fibroids. This treatment is typically performed under moderate sedation to ensure patient comfort.

Taking approximately 1 to 2 hours, the procedure requires an overnight hospital stay, after which patients can return home. The recovery period is relatively short, with most individuals resuming light activities within days and full activities after 7 to 10 days.

What are the Benefits of Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Uterine fibroid embolization offers a range of benefits for patients who opt for this treatment. It provides symptom relief from conditions caused by fibroids, such as heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, anemia, fatigue, and pelvic pain. As a minimally invasive procedure, uterine fibroid embolization boasts fewer risks and a faster recovery time compared to more invasive surgeries. Additionally, uterine fibroid embolization allows women to preserve their uterus, which can be an important consideration for those who may wish to have children in the future or prefer to avoid a hysterectomy.
