ImageCare Centers provides patients with services for vascular imaging in New Jersey. With our non-invasive vascular imaging studies, patients can benefit from information about their vascular system that helps them live healthier lives. We help physicians make timely, informed decisions about their patients’ vascular conditions so that they can receive the appropriate treatment.
Our radiologists use ultrasound to look directly inside the veins or arteries to assess the blood flow. There are several types of ultrasound tests for vascular imaging, including carotid duplex, venous duplex, and arterial Doppler. These tests help to identify blockages, abnormal valves, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke symptoms.
A carotid-artery duplex scan is used to detect atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries, the arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. A water-based gel is applied to the neck, and an ultrasound transducer is used to obtain images and record the sound of blood flow.
A venous duplex scan detects blood clots in the veins. This exam also evaluates venous insufficiency, a condition that prevents blood from flowing out of your legs and back to your heart. A water-based gel is applied to the legs, and ultrasound records images of the veins and the sound of blood flow within them. The patient is asked to perform various breathing exercises, and compression will be applied to the legs in several places throughout the test.
The arterial Doppler technique is used to measure and assess the flow of blood through the arteries. The amount of blood pumped with each beat indicates the size of a vessel’s opening. This technique can also be used to detect abnormal blood flow within a vessel, which could indicate a blockage from a clot, plaque, or inflammation.
