Bone Density Scan Preparation Tips: Do’s & Don’ts Before Your Exam
If you’ve been scheduled for a DEXA bone density scan, you may be wondering what to expect and how to prepare. The good news? It’s one of the easiest and most comfortable imaging
tests you can have. At ImageCare Radiology, our goal is to help you feel informed and relaxed before your appointment.
What Is a DEXA Bone Density Scan?
A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is a quick, noninvasive test that measures the strength and thickness of your bones. It’s most often used to diagnose osteoporosis or assess your risk of fractures. The scan uses a very low dose of X-rays—much less than a standard chest X-ray—to measure bone density in areas such as your hips, spine, or wrists.
The exam usually takes about 10–20 minutes and is completely painless. You’ll lie comfortably on a padded table while the scanner passes over your body.
How to Prepare: Practical Do’s and Don’ts
- Do wear comfortable clothing.
Choose soft, loose-fitting clothes without zippers, buttons, or metal fasteners. Metal can interfere with the X-ray image, so yoga pants, leggings, or sweatpants with an elastic waistband are ideal. - Don’t wear jewelry or accessories.
Remove belts, watches, or metal hair clips before your exam. Even small metal objects can distort the scan results. - Do eat normally before your scan.
There’s no need to fast. You can eat and drink as you normally would. However, avoid calcium supplements (and sometimes antacids containing calcium) for at least 24 hours before your exam, as they may affect your results. - Don’t schedule the scan right after other imaging with contrast.
If you’ve recently had a barium study, CT scan, or nuclear medicine test with contrast dye, wait at least a week before your DEXA scan to ensure accurate readings.
You will receive specific instructions, so follow those and you will be golden.
Common Questions People Ask
Will it hurt?
Not at all. A DEXA scan is completely painless. You won’t feel the X-rays or the movement of the scanner—just lie still for a few minutes and relax.
Do I need to change into a gown?
In many cases, no. As long as your clothing is metal-free and comfortable, you’ll likely stay in your own clothes.
How long does it take?
The entire appointment usually takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish.
Easing Anxiety Before Your Exam
It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous, especially if this is your first DEXA scan. Remember that this is a noninvasive, gentle, and routine test performed by caring technologists who do it every day. To help ease your mind:
- Ask questions. Knowing what to expect can make you feel more comfortable.
- Breathe and relax. The scan is quick, quiet, and doesn’t involve any injections or pain.
- Think of it as proactive care. You’re taking an important step to understand and protect your bone health.
At ImageCare Radiology, we’re here to make your DEXA bone density scan experience as smooth and reassuring as possible. With a little preparation—and a calm mindset—you’ll be ready for clear, accurate results that help you and your doctor make informed decisions about your bone health.
