National Mammography Day

The American Cancer Society states that 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. At ImageCare Radiology, we want to spread awareness of National Mammography Day. This day serves as a reminder to women ages 35 and over, to stay on top of their breast health by scheduling their mammogram appointments. We recommend women over the age of 35 schedule their annual mammogram screening with our caring specialists.

Mammography isn’t typically suggested for women under the age of 35 because the breast tissue is denser, meaning it is harder to analyze abnormalities in the breasts. A mammogram is an x-ray of your breast tissue, wherein a machine slightly compresses the breast. This helps make the breast more uniform in thickness and decreases the amount of x-ray you receive. It also helps the doctor reading your mammogram see differences in the breast tissue that would be missed without compressing the breast.

Sometimes, early detection of breast cancer involves lumps in the breasts, nipple discharge, and itching, however, breast cancer can develop without these symptoms. To stay on top of your breast health, schedule a mammogram screening to detect if there are any breast abnormalities that are deep inside the breast tissue that cannot be felt.

If there are any abnormalities detected during your annual mammogram, you will be asked to schedule a breast biopsy. This procedure allows your physician to get a clearer look at what may be happening inside of your breast tissue if your imaging procedures show areas of concern. The biopsy can be performed with fine-needle aspiration (the least invasive) or a core-needle biopsy. Once removed, the breast tissue will be analyzed by a pathology laboratory for evidence of abnormal molecular growth.
