How 3D Mammography Plays a Role in Detecting Breast Cancer

Every year, more than half of a million women die of breast cancer around the world. Advancements in technology and medical treatment, such as 3D mammography,  have greatly improved mortality rates, however, more needs to be done.

For patients, an annual mammogram is an important preventative screening tool. Accurate detection and diagnosis are vital to protecting women’s health. Early detection of breast cancer plays an important role in increasing the chances of survival. As such, radiologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals often turn to 3D mammography with artificial intelligence to help them detect breast cancer in its earliest stages.

3D Mammography with Artificial Intelligence

The detection of breast cancer improved greatly when 3D mammography entered the picture. Unlike 2D imaging, 3D mammography captures up to 300 images of each breast. This gives radiologists the information they need to build a more complete picture of the breast tissue beneath the skin.

With 3D mammography, radiologists were able to detect and identify more cancers than traditional 2D mammograms – at least 1 percent more. And while this might not seem statistically significant, the cancers they did identify were more aggressive types of cancers.

In 2018, the FDA approved artificial intelligence technology for use with 3D mammograms, allowing for an even deeper look into the breast tissue. Together with 3D mammography, artificial intelligence enhances the breast cancer screening process, making it easier to detect cancers.

How does it work?

Artificial intelligence assists radiologists by reading and interpreting the many images the 3D mammogram takes. It places a mark on any image where there might be a concern. It can also identify patterns that might indicate cancer or precancerous cells.

Studies have shown that 3D mammography with artificial intelligence detects cancer at a higher rate than traditional mammograms. When a radiologist works with AI technology to read and interpret mammogram results, they detect 8 percent more cancers.

Is a 3D Mammogram Right For You?

At ImageCare Radiology, we offer the latest 3D mammogram technology for our patients, including Artificial Intelligence (AI). By the end of October 2021, all of our 3D mammography machines will have Profound AI® integrated which will provide the best chance for an early and accurate diagnosis.

By using high-powered computing, we can convert hundreds of digital images to create a three-dimensional look inside your breast tissue. With 3D mammography and Profound AI, radiologists will have the information they need to catch cancer in its earliest stages.

When breast cancer is caught early (Stage 1, localized) women have a 99% chance of survival. This is why it is so important to schedule your screening mammogram today if it has been more than a year since your last one.
