October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at ImageCare, we want to spread awareness of the importance of receiving mammography in New Jersey. Mammograms become increasingly more important as women age. At age 35 and over, it is crucial to stay on top of your breast health with annual mammogram screenings. Schedule your appointment with ImageCare New Jersey to receive expert care and learn more about your breast health.A woman in a blue lab coat reads a mammogram screen and a woman in the back wears scrubs and looks at the woman in the front

Mammography isn’t typically suggested for women under the age of 35 because the breast tissue is denser, meaning it is harder to analyze abnormalities in the breasts. A mammogram is conducted by slightly compressing the breast to take an X-ray of the tissue. This helps make the breast more uniform in thickness and decreases the amount of X-ray you receive. It also helps the doctor reading your mammogram see differences in the breast tissue that would be missed without compressing the breast.

Breast cancer sometimes develops without any symptoms, but early signs of it can include:

  • Lumps in the breasts
  • Nipple discharge
  • Itching

Stay on top of your breast health by scheduling a mammogram screening at ImageCare. We will perform imaging services to determine whether there are any abnormalities within the breast tissue that cannot be detected without an X-ray.

If there are any abnormalities detected during your annual mammography in New Jersey, you will be asked to schedule a second mammogram or ultrasound. If there are abnormalities in your follow-up mammogram, you may be asked to schedule a breast biopsy. Follow-up diagnostics allow your physician to get a clearer look at what may be happening inside of your breast tissue if your initial mammogram shows areas of concern. If a biopsy is recommended, it may be performed with fine-needle aspiration (the least invasive) or a core-needle biopsy. Once removed, the breast tissue will be analyzed by a pathology laboratory for evidence of abnormal molecular growth.
